Executive summary

Our research wants to find out reason of traffic jam, focusing to weather and day of the week. We think rainy day has more traffic jam and weekday has more traffic jam and there are many literatures about this issue. In two hypotheses, independent variable is rain, and day of the week. Dependent variable is degrees of traffic jam. We choose the section to investigate, and used traffic statistics data in Seoul city’s highway traffic management center. We used weather data in the weather center, day of week data in calendar. Our unit of analysis is a car. Using these data, we score traffic jam; calculate average of each independent variable to standardization. In first hypothesis, rainy day’s traffic jam score is higher than sunny day’s traffic jam score. In second hypothesis, weekday’s traffic jam score is higher than holiday’s traffic jam score. Through these results, we can confirm our hypotheses. Two hypotheses are true. In other words, relationship between traffic jam and rain is correlation. Because road condition is bad and car would be slipped by rain. And relationship between traffic jam and weekday is correlation. Because going office or work place is essential traffic but going picnic is not essential traffic. So car of go to office in weekday is more than car of go to picnic in holiday. This research can be made good use of a traffic policy.
